How to install H7 LED Headlight Bulbs with Adapters

On many Volkswagen and Audi cars the headlight bulbs are held in place with external clips that have the power wires built into them. This can make installing an aftermarket HID conversion kit difficult because the larger HID bulb doesn’t fit and the new HID bulbs already have wires coming out of them. This same problem exists when trying to install aftermarket LED bulbs, specifically H7 LED headlight bulbs on Volkswagen and Audi vehicles.

GTR Lighting has specific HID bulb adapters to solve this problem when upgrading to HID bulbs. You can find a list of all these adapters here. So could we use the same H7 adapter and make it work of H7 LED headlight bulbs?

This is how the H7 HID bulbs fit. These adapters are specifically designed for HID bulbs, but can be modified to also work with GTR Lighting GEN 2 LED Headlight Bulbs.

Here is what we found: The H7 HID Bulb Adapter, found here, can in fact be used to create proper H7 bulb fitment in Volkswagen and Audi vehicles that have the metal clips to hold in the bulbs. With some slight modifications, this adapter worked great.

The GTR Lighting GEN 2 LED headlight bulbs come apart easily. The thumb screw on top allows the color shield to come off, then you can twist off the H7 style adapter collar.

When you go to re-install this piece it hits the heat sink of the new LED bulb. These two tabs need to be trimmed.

Using a bench grinder or a knife, cut down the two tabs on the bottom of the adapter so that they are much shorter and meet the angle of the heat sink on the back side of the LED headlight bulb.

Here you can see the H7 style adapter collar re-installed on the bulb, with the HID bulb adapter (modified now) also installed. It gets sandwiched between the H7 adapter collar on the LED bulb and the heat sink.

This method should allow you to install H7 LED headlight bulbs into your car when a bulb adapter is required.

 

Measurement Specs on the new GTR Lighting GEN 2 LED Headlight Bulbs

There’s a new LED headlight product out there that people are getting really excited about because it’s an LED bulb bright enough to be used in your fog lights or your headlights, and it’s not built like an HID conversion kit. The new GEN 2 LED Headlight bulbs by GTR Lighting have 2 really unique things going for them:

1. They are “All-In-One” which means there’s no external driver or ballast.

2. They come with 5 different color shields that allow you to have 6 different colors of light output!

These two benefits listed above also come with their own problems:

1. Because the LED driver is built in and the bulb is “all-in-one” it’s actually taller than the old style with the external driver even though the bulb part is shorter.

2. Because they have hot-swappable color shields when you’re using one it adds a little bit of size to the diameter of the light emitting portion, thus making it not work with the color shields installed in some applications. If your car has a tight fit for the bulb opening, you might only be able to use these bare, without the color shields. Here are some pictures to demonstrate:

This picture again shows the GEN 1 (left) versus the GEN 2 (right) and you can see the bulb base is smaller on the new bulbs, but the bulb length is longer also. This fixes one problem of having a large base, and potentially raises a new concern of the bulbs being too long to fit some applications. It's more important to have a smaller diameter than a short length, so the new design will definitely fit more applications.

The new GEN 2 dual beam LED headlight bulbs from GTR Lighting are actually larger than the old style when you have a color shield installed, but this isn’t really a concern with the dual beam bulbs because housings for this style of bulb are huge. If for some reason you do run into a fitment issue with the dual beam bulbs (a very rare problem) you can always remove the color shields to gain some space and run them at 5,000K color.

The single beam bulbs from the new GTR Lighting LED conversion kit lineup come in 2 sizes: the larger styles like H11, 9005, and 9006, and the smaller styles like H1, H3, and 880.

2002 – 2006 Dodge Ram 9007 LED Headlight Kit Install Writeup – DIY How To

For a long time it was known that the only way to do a plug and play lighting upgrade on the 2002 – 2006 Dodge Ram was to either use higher power halogen bulbs, or an HID conversion kit with a bunch of extra parts like resistors, a relay harness and capacitors. Because of this every time I heard about someone working on one I would get scared and not even want to help with it – it is an AWFUL install! Now with the invention of LED conversion kit bulbs and CANBUS modules for them, we decided to give this difficult vehicle a shot to see if we could install LED conversion kit bulbs easier in a 2003 Dodge Ram with 9007 headlight bulbs. Doing this install (once wired properly) proved to be a truly plug and play experience with no flickering and no “LAMP OUT” warning on the dash!

This particular truck was dated September of 2003 and used 9007 bulbs.

The first step was to get the new LED bulbs to actually fit inside the housing! Because the base of the bulb that holds the fan and heat sink is so much larger than the original bulb we had to use a bench grinder and shave about .25 inches off of the gray plastic retaining ring to allow everything to seat correctly. This took a few minutes and just took a little off at a time, tested it and kept doing that until it all fit together nicely.

The LED bulb comes apart. There's the bulb adapter that comes off and is secured to the housing by the gray plastic retaining ring, and the entire bulb assembly. We had to modify the plastic retainer before the new LED bulb would fit in place like the original.

After getting the bulbs to seat properly in the housing we took the GTR Lighting CANBUS module for 9007 out of the packaging and hooked it up straight away and the capacitor inside the module popped! The module actually exploded!! I’m not kidding – a little pop, some wet stuff came out and the little thing stunk to high heaven and smoked for a second. This wasn’t all too surprising though since when you hook a capacitor up backwards it will explode. That’s exactly what happened – the capacitor inside was wired wrong for this truck and exploded. So, after that excitement we took a new set of 9007 CANBUS modules and re-wired them so that everything looked like this:

So, all in all we got it to work after thinking about it and how to re-wire the CANBUS modules, and they’re definitely brighter than the stock headlights. Because they are LED they should be more reliable also.

Which Bulbs Fit the 2015 Nissan Altima SV?

I recently got my hands on a new 2015 Nissan Altima SV and at the time of writing this there is no database online or at the dealership that said what bulbs the vehicle took for headlights and fog lights. We wanted to upgrade the low beam headlights and the fog lights to LED or HID bulbs so to do the install we just had to tear the car apart and find out what it had under the hood!

Here’s what we found: On this particular 2015 Nissan Altima SV it used H11 low beam headlight bulbs and H11 fog light bulbs. We ended up going with 2 pairs of the GTR Lighting H11 LED Headlight conversion kit found here. These fit in the stock fog light and headlight housings perfectly with no modification necessary. They were 100% plug and play. We installed the lights, zip-tied up all the wiring and turned them on. That’s all there was to it!

If you’re like us, we love the look and power of HID bulbs in our vehicles and will use them any chance we get. So when it came to updating the Subaru BRZ we went all out and put HIDs in the headlights and fog lights. The strength and intensity of HID lights make them a perfect safety upgrade in headlights and fog lights during poor weather conditions. However, we found out that HIDs were not an ideal choice for our Subaru BRZ fog lights. In the Subaru BRZ, the power of the HID bulbs was too great for the fog light housings; within a few days they began to melt.

HID light sources provide the brightest illumination available and are considered the benchmark against which other forward lighting technologies are measured. HID light sources provide three to four times the light output of standard halogen light sources and promote better driving visibility by providing enhanced peripheral vision and improved down-road illumination. HID Bulbs use up to 65% less energy than conventional lighting and can last up to 10 times longer, but all of that light creates heat. I recommend never installing HID bulbs in Subaru BRZ fog lights. We had these 35w HIDs installed in the fog lights for 1 week until we noticed some bubbles forming on the lens. Then within another week we also noticed the chrome reflector starting to flake and melt. As soon as we could, we ordered new housings and replaced them with new LED lights instead.

So now what, are you stuck with dim, yellow light in your BRZ fog lights? Not to worry, we’ve found two great options from Black Top Racing that will look great and keep your fog light housings intact.

Their first option is a 950 lumen 80 watt LED bulb from GTR Lighting. These bulbs will give you the crisp, white light of HID, with the long life and simplicity of LED bulb replacement.

Their second option is a complete LED Conversion Kit that boasts 2,200 lumens per bulb—that’s up to 2.5 times the output of standard halogen bulbs! Totally plug and play, this kit will give you the crisp, white 6000k look of HID without the higher HID price tag. Although the LED Conversion Kit doesn’t quite match the power level of HID, the LED Kit is a great choice where heat and melting issues arise. The LED bulbs in the Conversion Kit are molded from aluminum to conduct and dissipate heat through the bulb.  Also, an embedded fan in each bulb creates a forced-air cooling system to cool the bulb, prolong the bulb life, and protect your fog light housings.
